“Here at Emerson, we are always looking for new and exciting activities to do with our residents. When we see an opportunity to give our residents a new experience that is better for their well-being, we always welcome the opportunity. This is exactly what we thought when we saw Obie.”

Emerson Health in Emerson, New Jersey is a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center focused on ensuring that for each and every one of their patients, their individualized needs are met. The center focuses on specialized care plans and rehabilitation plans that are specially designed for each resident to improve function, rebuild strength and mobility, and most importantly, to ensure a better quality of life for their residents. Rated among the nation’s Best Nursing Homes by U.S. News & World Report, they are always looking for new, innovative, and exciting activities to do with their residents. When they see an opportunity to give residents a brand new experience that has the potential to improve their well-being, they always welcome the opportunity. This is exactly what happened when they were first introduced to Obie.
After Obie was installed inside their Nursing Home, and the residents had a chance to try out Obie’s innovative games, they saw a positive change in the well-being of their residents right away! The Director of Recreation, Dolores Nieves, shared a recent example. Dolores witnessed a patient that was extremely upset and emotional. In an effort to help calm the patient, one of the staff turned on the Obie device and all of a sudden the tabletop where the patient was seated displayed Obie’s bright and beautiful games. The patient was so interested in Obie’s games and in interacting with the device, that they calmed down right away and began playing. Obie makes it easy for the staff to encourage and guide patients on how to play and patients love it! With some activities, it takes lots of time and effort for the staff to persuade the residents to get involved, but that is not the case with Obie. In turn, this makes the care staff’s job so much easier and less stressful.
Delores also strongly feels that Obie has helped to improve the quality of care that residents receive. Emerson provides lots of specialized services to their residents and one example is their safe and secure treatment of people living with Alzheimer's disease, Dementia, or other memory impairments. The center’s certified nursing staff use Obie as a targeted therapeutic recreational activity for this population.
Another one of Obie’s benefits is that the device has absolutely increased the amount of laughter and conversation between the residents. Obie is a great bonding activity that brings people together, when they weren’t previously interacting with each other. Emerson encourages socialization between the residents but many times, residents are not interested and keep to themselves. Obie has completely changed that dynamic and has helped many residents come out of their shell, especially those who were not so social before.
Obie has also been helpful in creating fun new activities when there was not already something planned by the staff. Obie has so many fun and interesting games and it's easy to change up the content, so residents don’t get bored playing the same thing over and over again. The device has been extremely beneficial in bringing the room to calm with a structured activity and our residents absolutely love it! “Obie has absolutely created a more positive environment inside our care home and we feel very lucky to have the device!”, shared Dolores.
“Obie has absolutely helped to increase the amount of laughter and conversation between our residents.”
