Baycrest

Founded in 1918, Baycrest is a global leader in geriatric residential living. With a special focus on brain health and aging, Baycrest is home to many senior care facilities as well as one of the world's top research institutes in cognitive neuroscience, the Rotman Research institute. The Foundation is currently on a mission to defeat dementia and create a world where every older adult enjoys a life of purpose, inspiration, and fulfillment.

Cyrelle Muskat, the Director of Quality, Systems, and Wellness at Baycrest, wanted to add the Obie interactive projector to more familiar activities in an effort to improve social engagement, cognitive health, and quality of life. Once Obie was installed, it was an immediate success, actively engaging more than 94 percent of residents and causing a noticeable positive shift in their mood. When observing the residents playing games using the Obie projector, the expression of glee on their faces is truly pleasing,” says Sabina Ntim, a Baycrest recreationist. Ms. Ntim observed that Obie challenged the residents' problem-solving skills, tested their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, and effectively targeted their memorization abilities. Other staff have noted that the Obie projector stimulates more socialization and engagement among residents, staff and visiting family members.

Upgrade your quality of care with Obie

Now that Obie had wowed the residents and care staff with its positive effects and ease of use, Baycrest was ready to invest. Thanks to the generosity of community donors Rhona Day and Bryan Kerdman, they were able to install three interactive projectors in their long-term care home, the Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged. Obie's ability to provide limitless meaningful experiences is perfectly in line with the facility's goal – to provide flexible and personal care based on each resident's needs and preferences.

While Obie is providing plenty of hygienic and engaging recreation for the residents in long-term care, Ntim would like to see Obie's impact spread far and wide. "I hope in the near future that all of our residents will be granted the amazing opportunity to use the Obie Projector," she said.

“The projector challenges the residents’ problem-solving skills and tests their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, while also effectively targeting their memorization abilities. This is all done while playing fun games. The residents have the unique opportunity to challenge themselves while also being entertained…it’s remarkable!”
